Three rules every pick has to pass
Unlocked, or it isn't listed
If a device ties you to one carrier, it doesn't make the list. I prioritize unlocked devices designed for broad U.S. carrier compatibility, but network support can vary by exact model, SKU and provider — always verify compatibility before purchasing or switching.
Compatibility and practicality first
I weigh practical features, build quality and clear trade-offs instead of spec-sheet marketing, and I say plainly where a pick falls short.
Short list on purpose
No 40-item roundups. A handful of picks per category is enough to make a confident decision in a few minutes.
